Founded in 1897, Agawam Hunt is a premier private sporting and social club located minutes from Providence. The Club’s 130 acres feature a Donald Ross–designed 18-hole golf course, extensive racquet facilities (ten grass courts, four Har Tru, two indoor hard, squash, platform tennis, pickleball), a heated pool, a fitness center, and a year-round Clubhouse.

Position Summary

The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the care, maintenance, and presentation of Agawam’s golf course, tennis courts, and grounds. The role oversees agronomy, staffing, budgeting, equipment, and capital projects to ensure consistently excellent playing conditions while balancing environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain the golf course and tennis grounds to premier private club standards. 
• Plan and manage fertility, irrigation, drainage, aeration, Pest Management programs.
• Lead and mentor maintenance staff; recruit, train, and evaluate team members.
• Manage operating and capital budgets; oversee purchasing and inventory.
• Direct equipment maintenance, safety, and compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
• Partner with The Nature Conservancy to apply sustainable practices that balance conditioning with conservation.
• Plan and oversee course projects, renovations, and seasonal cultural practices.

Candidate Profile

• Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred.
• 6+ years of progressive golf course management experience, private club experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated success managing cool-season turf and classic Donald Ross style courses.
• Experience with construction, renovation, and grow-in projects.
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
• Spanish fluency a plus.
• Rhode Island pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within 90 days).

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive base salary commensurate with experience $115-165k, performance bonus, health insurance, life insurance, paid time off, professional association dues, and continuing education support.
