    Position/Title:       Assistant Superintendent

    Harmon Golf and Fitness in Rockland, MA is seeking a motivated individual for the role of Assistant Superintendent. Harmon is a unique property with many unique challenges and overall a great place to learn while gaining valuable experience. This is an entry level management position intended to provide the right candidate with the experience they need to move on to the next level. The Assistant Superintendent will gain experience in irrigation repair, chemical applications, team management, and even some equipment maintenance. The previous Assistant accepted an opportunity with a higher resource club in the area.

    Applicants must have a strong desire to succeed in the turf industry and understand the hours kept in the golf season. While working long hours is sometimes required, we strive to provide a quality work/life balance as well.

    Education/Licensing: High School Diploma/ equivalent, must have or be able to acquire MA Core applicators license

    Working Experience: Minimum of 3 seasons on a grounds staff required with excellent recommendations

    Compensation: $55-57k, paid vacation, pro shop credit, membership to national and local association, benefits available, encouraged use of facilities

    Job Description:
    Assists in turf management and in the maintenance, repair, construction and general condition of the public golf course.  Assists the Superintendent in discharging the administrative, supervisory and instructional duties; all other related work as required.  Is responsible for carrying out the work program in the absence of the Superintendent.

    Operates a variety of mowing and spraying equipment, hand and power tools, calibration equipment, tractors, sweepers and weed whackers.
    Assists in the training and evaluation of maintenance personnel, assigns and supervises the work of a mechanic, working foreman and grounds personnel.  Supervises the technical training of all employees on all types of machinery.

    Carries out a program of grounds maintenance to ensure that buildings, tees, fairways, greens and adjoining areas are kept in satisfactory conditions at all times, with a strong emphasis on the Town’s Environmentally Sustainable Land Management Plan.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    High School diploma, plus additional courses in turf management, agronomy or horticulture.  Five years progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and operations of golf courses, including one year in a supervisory capacity.

    Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License

    Valid Massachusetts Pesticide License

    Additional Qualifications:
    Knowledge of golf course maintenance.  Knowledge of proper use of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.  Knowledge of drainage control and irrigation systems.  Knowledge of the rules related to the game of golf is desirable.  Ability to plan work, supervise and evaluate subordinates.  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

    Physical Requirements:
    Moderate to considerable physical effort required on most occasions, including the lifting of 50 pound fertilizer bags, logs, sod and reel cutting units.  Constant physical activity including walking, bending, standing, pushing and pulling.

    $1,338.29 weekly + benefits

    Summary:
    Under minimal supervision, the Test Facility Assistant Superintendent will initiate, develop and conduct all phases of the maintenance of turf, tees, greens and equipment to tour conditions for product and development and testing for the Manchester Lane Test Facility. When the Superintendent is not on-site, this individual will be required to maintain all facility functions in his absence.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist in the planning and supervising the maintenance of the test facility including tees, fairways, bunkers, cart paths, rough areas. Applies pesticides and herbicides and soil conditioners as necessary.
    • May schedule vendor/contractor work at the Test Facility and supervise their activities to ensure compliance with all safety and compliance regulations.
    • Repair and maintain equipment, building and surroundings as required.
    • Conduct hazardous waste and safety duties in compliance with all Federal, state, and corporate regulations. Document/report as necessary.

    Requirements:

    • Landscaping experience highly preferred
    • Grounds keeping work in a golf course environment preferred.
    • Must not be adversely affected by materials in a golf course environment.
    • Must possess basic mechanical competency.
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and have the physical stamina necessary to complete outdoor physical tasks for long periods of time (summer or winter conditions included).
    • Must be willing to work overtime.
    • Must have good or corrected eyesight.
    • Must possess accurate color vision.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
    • Must be able to travel on company business as necessary, occasionally on short notice
    • Preferably be willing and able to pursue license to apply herbicides/pesticides.
    • Preferably be willing and able to obtain a state required hoist license.

    Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Superintendent:

    • Works with the Superintendent to ensure that the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans are maintained and followed.
    • Supervises and assists maintenance staff in daily duties.

    • Ensures associates obtain proper license needed to perform job tasks safely and within city, state, and federal regulations.  Addresses directly all real or perceived environmental concerns.
    • Manages department members that may include, but is not limited to: Mechanic, Environmental Technician, Equipment Operator, Foreman, Greenskeeper, and Irrigation Technician.
    • Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new associate.  Develops ongoing training programs.
    • Monitors business volume forecast and plans accordingly in areas of manpower, productivity, costs and other expenses.
    • Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.

    Minimum Qualifications for the Assistant Superintendent:

    • Bachelors degree, Associates degree or equivalent from a four or two year college; 3-4 year related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience (degree preference in agronomy/horticulture/plant/soil science.

    Other Qualifications:

    • Proficient in Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, & Outlook.
    • Ability to obtain Massachusetts pesticide license within 6 months of employment.

    Facility Name: Wellesley Country Club
    Facility Location: Wellesley, MA
    Position/Title: Equipment Manager


    Facility Description:
    Wellesley Country Club is a private club which includes the traditional 18 hole main course with an additional par 3 short course located 10 miles west of Boston. Construction of turf care maintenance facility was completed in 2016. The equipment management area consists of 5000 square feet of service area, dedicated parts and grinding rooms, and mechanic’s office.

    Duties Description:
    Under direct supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the mechanic assumes all responsibilities involving golf course maintenance equipment. Responsibilities include diagnosing, repairing, and implementing a preventative maintenance program.

    • Maintaining all the equipment on a preventative and curative basis
    • Small engine repair
    • Diesel engine diagnostics
    • Hydraulic system functionality and repair
    • Responsible for all mechanical stock, ie: parts, nuts, bolts, oil, etc.
    • Working within monthly parts and repair budget
    • Monitoring and ordering fuel supplies
    • Responsible for inventory and proper handling of club provided snap-on and other provided tools.
    • Thorough record keeping
    • Maintaining all cutting units to the satisfaction of the Superintendent ie: grinding, height of cut, and operation.
    • Attending educational conferences to maintain industry certifications
    • Perform daily on course inspections for proper cut
    • Assist with any and all training on use of equipment
    • Supervise and train assistant mechanic when needed
    • Maintain a clean and safe working environment
    • Must be able to lift 50lbs

    Requirements:

    • At least 2 years working as a head golf course mechanic or as an assistant mechanic at a reputable club
    • Must have a high school diploma

    Benefits/Compensation:
